RANDOM LENGTH MILLED LOGS
Spring River Log Homes has partnered with a Western timber/log mill and a Eastern timber/log mill in purchasing large quantities of random length Engelmann Spruce, Douglas-fir, Western Redcedar and Eastern Redcedar Logs for our customers who want to save money over a precut log home.
The “Logs Only” System will save you money over a precut kit, because all the cutting (includes cutting the doors/windows) and assembling is done as part of the final construction process on your foundation/subfloor. No blueprints (working drawings) or stack sheets comes with this system.
Western Milled Logs
Our western logs are “Winter Cut”, then stickered, paper capped and air-dried for a minimum of 120 days. The aired environment of Montana (considered a dry climate zone) allows the moisture content of the cants to be brought down to approximately 19% with minimum checking. Some checking will take place though, because the logs will continue to dry down after they’re stacked to around 13% in Missouri. After being properly air-dried, the cants are run through a 16 knife planer to form either the standard double tongue and groove or single tongue and groove D-Log pattern. Our most popular 8”x 6” and 8”x 8” patterns have a 7-1/4” stack height with a drip edge. In addition to the standard D-log, the Double D-log, handcrafted milled log and Appalachian style patterns can be milled. Matching log siding is available. Available wood species are Engelmann Spruce, Douglas-fir and Western Redcedar. See “Our Logs” for a brief description of each species. The logs will vary between 8’-16’, being heavy on the 12’-16’ side. The logs can be graded by Timber Product Inspections (TPI) for a small additional fee. The majority will grade Premium and Select, the two highest grades given. All logs can be stamped dry (19% and less) by TPI also.

Laminated Milled Logs
Laminated milled logs can virtually eliminate warping, checking, twisting, and settling associated with traditional log homes. These are the strongest, driest, and finest quality milled logs available. The glue that is used between the layers creates an irreversible, waterproof bond that actually gets stronger with age. These laminated logs will never come apart. The unique nature of laminated logs allow you to mix wood species for your personal taste. An example would be Western Red Cedar on the exterior (rot resistance), with a bright Spruce/Pine interior color. Our laminated logs are manufactured from 2x material ranging from 6' to 16' long. The final product will come in random lengths, generally between 6' to 16' long, heavy to the longs.

Eastern Milled Logs
Eastern Redcedar is available in random lengths logs; this is a beautiful wood with a pleasant smell. Redcedar is a member of the juniper family and is native to the forests of South Central United States. This wood demonstrates a distinct contrast between the almost-white sapwood and the red to brown heartwood. It’s a relatively strong wood with overall strength considered approximately 80% that of White Oak. Redcedar has a fine grain, soft texture, highly stable with moisture change and its heartwood is decay resistant. The 8”x 7” and the 6”x 8” patterns have a 7-3/8” stack height with a drip edge. Matching log siding is available.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Explain more about the “Logs Only” System: This refers to the way Spring River Log Homes sells the wood components to you. We deal only with the major wood components that cannot be purchased locally, i.e. milled logs, log siding, timber beam and posts. By ordering these materials only, you’ll avoid the overhead, extra freight, broken windows, wrong colors, additional lead time and markup that kit manufacturers are forced to build into their log kits. The other components, such as windows, doors and shingles can be purchased locally, cutting out the middleman. Flexibility is another big advantage of “Logs Only.” You preserve the ability to make modifications during the progression of log stacking. It’s my opinion though, with the “Logs Only” system your contractor should be an experienced log home builder/carpenter. Specialty saws, tools and techniques are needed to properly stack/seal log walls and gables. Overall, random length logs will save you money over a precut log home, but additional labor costs could occur with an inexperience contractor.
2. How are the logs fastened and sealed? The logs can be fastened in several ways; lag bolts, engineered fasterned and thru-bolts. Most milled logs are fastened by the engineered fasteners, such as “LogHog” by FastenMaster. They recommend their fasteners to be spaced every 16”. LogHogs install faster and easier than lags and spikes, requires no predrilling, corrosion resistance and engineered for increased strength and performance. Foam tape, such as Emseal is placed in the center of the milled log and a quarter inch bead of caulk is applied to the beveled front edge of the tongue. This provides two seals against air infiltration; plus the caulk provides a water barrier.
3. What’s the difference between Winter-Cut (green) & Standing Dead trees? “Winter-cut” trees are alive and healthy when harvested during the fall and winter months. The sap is dormant at this time, which insures minimum moisture content and checking. Winter-cut trees are disease and insect free; they’ll make superior log homes.
“Standing dead” trees were killed by insects, fire or disease, and can remain sound and standing for years before they fall over, especially at higher altitudes. Standing dead trees are always sap stained (streaks of green, blue, gray and brown), can be severally checked (spiral cracks) and are more likely to have decay and bugs. Checks are good pathways for insects and moisture decay with your log home. These logs will not grade out like our winter-cut logs will. Very little of the standing dead will grade over a Wall Log 40 on the TPI grading scale; two-three grades lower than our Premium/Select winter-cut Spruce logs. Numerous milled log home manufactures use this inferior product (standing dead) because it offers a cheaper price; buyers beware.
Spring River Log Homes does not sell any “standing dead” milled logs.
4. What do graded logs mean? Due to popularity of log homes and the lack of any grading standards, the Log Home Council in 1979 teamed up with an engineering firm and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) to develop a standard for grading and assigning strength values to logs and timbers. Before this, builders lacked the knowledge of working with log structures; i.e. such as using undersized logs.
Architects/engineers can now assign the proper TPI stress grade, based on quality, size, and species of log for a particular use, or conversely, design the structure around a particular species, size and grade of log available to the log home builder. The majority of our Spruce logs will grade out to Premium and Select, the two highest grades given. For additional information, see design/engineering.
5. I have a set of plans; can I use random length logs? Yes! With the “Logs Only” system, about any set of plans can be used. If you’d like help in calculating your log material requirements, send us a set of your plans and we be glad to do the calculations for you. If you do not have a set of plans, an estimate can be done with the following information:
This is a free estimate with no obligation.
• The height and length of all walls
• The numbers and sizes of all windows and doors
• The pitch of your roof
• Your preferred corner configuration
• The size of the log you intend to use
• Once we’ve determine the linear feet of logs, we’ll apply the most current price to calculate an estimate for your order.
6. How are the logs/materials delivered to the building site? Our Montana shipments are tarped and delivered to your construction site on a flatbed trailer. The customer is responsible for making arrangements to have the materials unloaded upon arrival. Our logs are loaded onto the trailer in bundles that can be safely unloaded by an experienced forklift operator.
